Uno card is one of the most popular games played by every family member above 7. A card game like UNO is breaking records by being the most entertaining game that increases the family's bond as two or more players can play it. There is a twist in this game, it is not played by the original 52-card deck, whereas there is a different format with color, number, and action cards. When it comes to unraveling the thrill of the UNO card game, many people do not know the basic rules of it and how it is played.
Therefore, here are the rules of the original UNO game that is also used in the UNO app. Let’s move further with this article and learn everything about UNO.
What is UNO?
In contrast to other card games, UNO requires that you lose all of your cards to win. We have all seen or heard a lot of UNO-related memes, but they are all accurate. When you play UNO, there is a definite fear of losing on everyone’s face since the game becomes so addicting (in a good way).
The UNO card game consists of 108 cards divided into four colors (red, green, yellow, and blue). Also, it has action cards. Each color card has 0-9 numbers and three action cards of the same color such as Skip, reverse, and Draw two. Moreover, there are four Wild cards and four Wild Card Fourc cards that do not belong to any color.
History of UNO
Merle Robbins developed the card game UNO in 1971 to settle a dispute with his son over the game Crazy Eights rules. Merle realized the game had enormous potential after creating a version only for his family to enjoy.
Merle, a fan of card games, used money he had saved to create his first 5,000 UNO decks, which he then sold to his barbershop and while traveling. The rights to the game weren’t purchased by International Games Inc. (Bob Tezak) and Mattel until much later.
5 Basic Rules of UNO Card
Whether you are playing UNO with cards or on the UNO app, the rules are the same. However, when playing with friends, the rules can differ as per the player's choice. Therefore, the basic rules do not change, let’s move forward and know about it.
Game Structure
You should shuffle the 108 cards and deal 7 cards to each player. The remaining cards will be put together in a draw pile by facing down. From the draw pile, face up the starting card to discard the card from the hands.
Starting the Game
If you know the basic rules of card games like UNO, you would know that the left side of the dealer goes first. He needs to match the top card of the discard pile by the same color, number, or any action card similar to that color. If the player doesn’t have any of the cards, he can draw any wild card. Additionally, if the player doesn’t have that too, he needs to pick a card from the draw pile, if playable, then put the card on the discard cards, and the chances move to the other person.
Action Cards
As the name suggests, actions are essential in this game to make it more thrilling and exciting for the players on the table.
Skip: The chance of the next player is skipped.
Reverse: If the table is moving on the right side, with this card, it will move from the left side.
Draw Two: The next person has to pick two cards from the draw pile.
Wild Card: The person who has drawn this card, has the power to change the color.
Wild Card Four: The next person has to pick four cards with the power of color changing.
Announcing UNO
If you have only one card left in your hand, you must announce UNO until any of the players catches you. If you get caught with a single card without saying UNO, you have to draw a penalty for two cards.
Winning
The first who gets rid of all the cards first wins the game.
Note: There are no such rules for points, but you can add how many times a person has won to add more thrill to the game.
